چکیده

Fire plays an important ecological role in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. Many Mediterranean plant species exhibit enhanced germination capacity when exposed to heat. In the present study, the effect of high temperatures and exposure times on germination of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) was analyzed in order to reveal the response of seeds to fire and the implications on species regeneration. Seeds were heated to a range of temperatures (from 75 to 170 oC) and exposure times (from 30 seconds to 30 minutes) similar to those obtained in surface soil layers during natural fires. In total, twenty treatments were performed. Seed germination percentages and germination values were calculated for each treatment. The results of ANOVA performed for germination values showed that temperature had a significant effect. Germination percentages increased in thermal treatments at 70 oC for 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 min; at 105 oC for 10, 15, 20, and 25 min, and at 130 oC for 1 and 2 min. The increase in both temperature and exposure times generally decreased the germination percentage especially at 130 °C and over in comparison with the control. Maximum germination percentage was reached in the treatment at 130 oC for 1 min while the minimum germination was reached at 130 oC for 10 min.

Throughfall Chemistry of Persian Maple (Acer velutinim) and Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia) Plantations in East of Mazandaran

Changes in the quality of water reaching forest floor are of the most important consequences of native and exotic tree species plantations for rehabilitating the derelict areas of the Caspian forests. The aim of this study was to compare the chemical composition of throughfall in plantations of Persian maple (Acer velutinim Bioss) and Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia Ten) in Darabkola Forest, Sa...

Evaluation of Nonlinear Height-Diameter Models of Two Important Species of Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia) and Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis), in the Planted Forests

Knowledge about the relationship between tree height (H) and diameter at breast height (D) is crucial for forest planning, monitoring, biomass estimation, and forest stands dynamics description. In this study, 20 different height-diameter models were evaluated to estimate accurately the height of the trees of Pinus brutia and Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis species in Arabdagh region (...

Effect of seed weight, light regime and substratum microsite on germination and seedling growth of Quercus semiserrata Roxb

Seeds of Quercus semiserrata Roxb. vary widely in weight, and can be classified into small (<5 g), intermediate (5 to 8 g) and heavy (>8 g) classes. Heavy seeds contain greater reserves of protein, carbohydrate, lipid and energy than intermediate-weight and small seeds. Seed weight has a strong effect on germination. Heavy seeds germinate early and show better germination than small seeds both ...

Sulphur content of Red pine (Pinus brutia) needles and bark as indicator of atmospheric pollution in Southwest Turkey

One-, twoand three-year-old red pine (Pinus brutia var. brutia) needles and tree bark samples were collected and analyzed for their sulphur content from localities where dead trees were observed. The results indicate that the sulphur content has increased in localities exposed to high levels of SO2 emission. The highest increase was observed in two-year-old needles. We thus conclude that the su...

Seed germination of three provenances of Pinus brutia (Ten.) as influenced by stratification, temperature and water stress.

Seeds from three provenances of Pinus brutia were stratified for 0 or 45 d (days) at 4 +/- 1 degrees C and then germinated at 15 degrees C or 20 degrees C on filter paper saturated with polyethylene glycol solutions to provide water potentials of 0, -0.2 and -0.4 MPa (mega Pascal). Regardless of stratification, germination was lower at 15 degrees C than 20 degrees C for seeds of all provenances...
